The Governor of Chiapas Manuel Velasco Coello commended the talent of local artisans during the Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas State Crafts Competition awards.
The contest has been held for 31 years with help from the National Fund for the Promotion of Crafts (Fonart).
Alongside Fonart General Director Liliana Romero Medina, the governor stressed the importance of promoting Chiapas’ culture and traditions through the creativity of the men and women who have placed the state as a national and international model for craftsmanship.
A total of 600,000 pesos ($36,000 USD) were awarded during this edition of the competition.
Handcrafted pieces were presented in over 13 different categories including pottery, basketry, wood carving, lacquer, textiles, masks and musical instruments.
