“The most popular beaches of the state of Yucatan remain free of large quantities of sargassum”, said the head of the Progreso Civil Protection Unit, Aurelio Teodoro Medina Pérez.
The municipal official indicated that the beaches look quite clean and the local authorities have not had the need to apply operations to collect seaweed.
He said that for now Yucatan is far from facing an emergency such as the one caused by the arrival of large extensions of sargassum in the Mexican Caribbean.
Meanwhile, the technical secretary of the Secretariat of Tourism Development (Sefotur), Raul Paz Noriega, stated in recent days that the problems related to the accumulation of sargassum on the beaches of Quintana Roo “open a big window of opportunity for Yucatan that must be seized”.
