Discover the riches that the Bajos del Norte National Park protects
On January 9, the Bajos del Norte National Park was declared a Natural Protected Area in the Official Gazette of the Federation. This Park is located 140 kilometers off the coast of Yucatan, and together with the Arrecife Alacranes National Park, it will contribute to the recovery of commercial species such as red grouper, octopus and spiny lobster.
The Bajos del Norte National Park has 1 million 304 thousand 114 hectares of protected marine areas, placing it as the largest Natural Protected Area in the Gulf of Mexico.
Endangered species
This new Natural Protected Area is connected to the Arrecife Alacranes National Park and both form a conservation corridor that is a refuge for endangered species such as sharks, turtles, octopus, grouper and lobster.
This new protected area is the result of the joint effort of national scientists, civil society organizations, fishermen and the federal government.
Global agreement
With this decision, Mexico is approaching to comply with the global agreement to protect 30% of its marine territory by 2030 and guarantee the source of employment and food for thousands of families.
This site is not usually visited by tourists as it happens with the Arrecife Alacranes National Park. Likewise, scientific research has been very scarce in the area.
