The Ecological Police of this port reported that at the end of March the turtle nesting season begins on the Yucatan coast.
“At the end of this month of March, the return of sea turtles for spawning is expected in the annual nesting season of turtles in Progreso and its coastal commissaries,” said the director of the corporation, Obdulio Mena Sánchez.
He stressed that in the protection of the turtles, they work in coordination with the turtle camp of Cetmar 17, which is in charge of taking care of the nests and eggs after their location and recovery.
“We try to have a better season for this year and, with that, continue to contribute to the recovery of this species,” he said.
Mena Sánchez indicated that the elements of the Ecological Police will receive training to follow the protocols in the care of the turtles.
He explained that the protection tasks range from their exit, during the spawning and on the return to the sea, and “also about what to do with the eggs and nests, as well as the treatment during the hatching and their release.”
Last year, it was said that the Turtle Camp of Cetmar 17, led by biologist Carlos Aguilar Alemán, recorded more than 228 nests containing 23,810 eggs.
