Workers of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) who work in archaeological zones of Tabasco and Yucatán, such as Dzibilchaltún, Uxmal, Mayapán and Izamal, closed the spaces due to the situation that the institution headed by Diego Prieto Hernández.
In the Archaeological Zone of Comalcalco, in Tabasco, the workers placed banners that read: “Operational paralysis of the INAH due to lack of budget to comply with the most elementary rights of its working base and the minimum resources to work.”
In another banner, the workers wrote to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador: “Your intervention for the budget regularization in the SHCP is urgent and cannot be postponed to guarantee compliance with the INAH’s labor commitments with its workers.”
The protest spread to social networks, where the workers said: ” We do not accept non-compliance and delay in payment of wages and benefits of INAH workers.”
The workers pointed out that more budget is of the utmost importance to guarantee the adequate conservation, investigation, and custody of the Mexican cultural heritage.
In Yucatán, Dzibilchaltún was also closed and at the entrance, the workers also put up blankets in which they rejected the budget cut for the INAH and demanded that the clothes be delivered immediately, because “it is an obligation of the authority with the workers “.
They added that the Covid-19 pandemic has not stopped them to fulfill their function of protecting heritage. However, they demanded supplies and “protective equipment to guarantee the health of the workers.”
