Two shipping lines that have operated in this port for several years with weekly ships carrying containers from various ports around the world have cancelled their arrivals due to the fact that their large vessels cannot dock at the specialized container terminal of the high-sea port.
Their cancellations, as feared, are due to the consequences of the damage that occurred at the beginning of this month on pier six of the Yucatan Container Terminal (TCY), which has forced all ship maneuvers, loading and unloading operations to be suspended. Ships are being diverted to the Port of Veracruz instead.
There, the cargo is unloaded and transported by road to Progresso.
The shipping lines that cancelled their arrivals have already informed their clients and are Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Mexico S.A. de C.V., which transport 200 import containers with diverse cargo.
Additionally, they were carrying export cargoes, which are now being handled through the Port of Veracruz.
Maersk Line is a major shipping line with connections to various ports in Europe, Asia, North America, Central and South America, while MSC has connections from Kingston, Jamaica and other ports for maritime transport.
MSC sent a statement to its clients last Thursday from Mexico City informing them of the temporary suspension of service at the Port of Progresso.
The statement reads: “Dear client, due to the current situation registered in Puerto Progreso (Pier 6) (damage to that pier), we are forced to temporarily suspend our ship calls in this location. Therefore, effective immediately, we will interrupt the reception of bookings from said port”.
“We are working to find alternative solutions that will minimize the impact on your operations as soon as possible and keep you informed. We remain committed to providing you with the best service possible. We regret any inconvenience this external situation may cause you.”
