Yucatan is one of the five states in Mexico with the highest cost for the basic basket of goods, with prices increasing by 4.56%.
The National Alliance of Small Merchants (Anpec) reported that Yucatan is among the states where the prices of the basic basket have risen the most. With an inflation rate of 4.76%, which continues to rise, a challenging year-end is anticipated for Yucatecan households.
A study conducted by Anpec across the 32 states of Mexico, sampling over 200 points of sale in areas of high, medium, and popular consumption, revealed that the basic food basket (CBA) increased by an average of 1.70% in the last month. The average cost of the basic basket in Mexico is 1,903.03 pesos, while in Yucatan and four other states, it is higher.
States with Highest Increases
The five states with the highest increases in the basic basket are:
– Chihuahua: 7.65%
– State of Mexico: 7.30%
– Tamaulipas: 7.06%
– Oaxaca: 5.76%
– Yucatan: 4.56%
These increases reflect significant economic pressure, especially on essential products for Mexican families.
Most Expensive Products in Yucatan
Among the products that have seen the highest price increases in the last month are:
– Onions: 18.58% increase, from 27.25 to 32.31 pesos per kilogram
– Whole Chicken: 9.86% increase, from 69.55 to 76.41 pesos
– Tomato Salad: 9.18% increase, from 30.80 to 33.63 pesos
– Lentils: 8.72% increase, from 39.81 to 43.28 pesos
– Green Tomatoes: 5.96% increase, from 35.11 to 37.20 pesos
Economic Impact
Cuauhtémoc Rivera, president of Anpec, stated that inflation continues to pressure the purchasing power of Mexican households. He warned that measures such as “state stores” or “guaranteed prices” on certain basic products will not be enough to reduce the cost of the basic basket. Rivera emphasized the need to reduce the intermediary market in the supply chain as a key strategy to stop the escalation of prices in essential products.
“Supply and supply logistics must be as small as possible to achieve better prices,” Rivera stressed, highlighting the need for a more direct and efficient distribution structure to offer more affordable prices to consumers.
The projected increase in inflation for the end of the year poses a significant challenge for consumers in Yucatan and the rest of the country. The high cost of the basic basket threatens to continue affecting the economic well-being of Mexican families, especially in states like Yucatan, where the prices of essential foods have seen one of the most significant increases in the country.
