This year marks the 11th anniversary of the Mérida Carnival’s relocation to the Xmatkuil fairgrounds, after traditionally being held in the Historic Center. The move, which took place in 2014, aimed to improve organization and enhance the experience for attendees.
The decision to shift the carnival to Xmatkuil was driven by several factors:
1. Decongestion: The parades and events in the Historic Center had caused significant traffic congestion and disrupted local businesses and residents. Moving to Xmatkuil eased the burden on the city center and facilitated better mobility for both participants and the general population.
2. Larger and Safer Venue: Xmatkuil, known for hosting the Yucatan Fair, offered a more suitable infrastructure for parades, concerts, and carnival activities. The venue features specific areas for parking, food, and equipped spaces for shows, enhancing the overall attendee experience.
3. Environmental and Social Impact: The large influx of people in the Historic Center had led to garbage accumulation and logistical complications. By relocating to Xmatkuil, organizers could implement better waste and logistics management, ensuring a more orderly environment.
Despite initial controversies and divided opinions, the Mérida Carnival in Xmatkuil has established itself as one of the most important events in southeastern Mexico, providing a more comfortable and organized experience for both citizens and visitors.
