Mero Season Off to Average Start in Progreso: Good Prices and Vessel Returns Reported

38

In an interview with El Diario, Enrique Sánchez Sánchez, president of Canainpesca and Exportamar, described the current fishing situation in Progreso as “average,” with catch volumes varying significantly from vessel to vessel. Just one month before the start of the grouper season, mid-sea vessels have begun anchoring in the port, bringing in between 1,500 and 1,800 kilos of grouper.

Sánchez noted that while some vessels bring in up to three tons of fish, others manage only one or one and a half tons. However, he emphasized that the average catch is around 1.5 to 1.8 tons.

Competitive Prices Drive Second Round

Despite varying catch volumes, prices remain high, making them competitive and sufficient for vessels to make a second round. Some vessels are already returning from their first trip, with expected returns by mid- or late May.

Coastal fishermen are waiting for the Santa Cruz cordonazo, also known as “San Timón,” which typically brings favorable fishing conditions. However, according to the Yucatán Civil Protection unit, there are currently no favorable conditions for this phenomenon.

Good Movement During Holy Week

During Holy Week, there was good movement of seasonal seafood in the state, with a typical surge in demand every year. However, now that the season is over, the industry relies heavily on exports. Sánchez pointed out that 95% of grouper is exported, while other species are marketed locally.

In summary, while the current fishing situation in Progreso is described as average, good prices and vessel returns are reported. Coastal fishermen await the Santa Cruz cordonazo, which may bring favorable fishing conditions.
