Mérida’s Security Buttons: A Misunderstood Lifeline in the Historic Center

A curious phenomenon has been observed in Mérida’s downtown area where tourists often mistake security buttons for pedestrian devices, prompting an explanation from Commander Rafael Chaires Cuevas, director of the Municipal Police.

According to statistics from the police department, more than half of all emergency calls received at their station are a result of mistaken use of these buttons. Foreign visitors have been misusing the security devices due to unfamiliarity with the local context, despite clear signage indicating their purpose.

In an effort to enhance public safety, ten security buttons were installed throughout the Historic Center last February. Located in prominent areas such as parks and corridors, these buttons are designed to help in situations of distress or threat.

Commander Chaires Cuevas noted that high-traffic zones like 62nd Street and outside the ADO terminal have seen a disproportionate number of mistaken uses of these devices. In response, on-site staff now offer guidance on their proper use.

Only two serious incidents have been reported since the installation of the security buttons: an elderly individual with low blood pressure who received immediate medical attention, and an English tourist who experienced symptoms of heat stroke several weeks ago. Fortunately, both cases were handled promptly by local authorities.

While intended for the entire population, especially those in need of assistance during emergencies, Commander Chaires Cuevas emphasizes the importance of responsible use of these security buttons. He advises that his personnel, particularly those monitoring the city’s main square, will provide support and clarification to anyone unsure about their purpose.
