Mérida Dominates Tourism in Yucatán, Drawing 8 Out of 10 Visitors

The city of Mérida has solidified its position as a top destination for tourists in Yucatán, attracting a staggering 8 out of 10 visitors arriving in the region through April. According to official figures from the Ministry of Tourism Development (Sefotur), the number of overnight tourists visiting Yucatán increased by 9% during the first four months of this year compared to the same period last year.

A total of 908,662 visitors arrived in the state with hotel reservations for overnight stays between January and April, marking a significant jump from 832,903 during the same period in 2024. The influx of tourists has been boosted by Holy Week celebrations, which drew large crowds to the region.

Mérida emerged as the most popular destination for overnight tourists, accounting for 743,160 visitors or 81.8% of the statewide total. Valladolid was a close second, with 106,255 overnight visitors representing 11.7% of the total.

Other notable destinations in Yucatán that reported significant numbers of tourist reservations include Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, and Izamal. The archaeological site of Chichén Itzá saw 23,651 tourists, while Uxmal drew 14,929 visitors. Izamal, known as the “Yellow City,” welcomed 20,667 overnight visitors.
