An American couple lost control of their car when it flipped on the Mérida-Cancún toll highway.

Diario de Yucatán reported that according to police sources, after going off-road, the vehicle ran along the embankment until it hit a large boulder, which caused it to end up upside down.

Both occupants were able to extract themselves from the wreckage after the car ended up on the side of the road. They had been wearing their seatbelts at the time and suffered only minor injuries. Their names were not disclosed.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and offered aid to the couple, while police cordoned off the area and directed transit.

Since November, long sections of the Mérida-Cancún toll highway have been closed for construction related to the controversial Tren Maya, as well as general maintenance after a severe hurricane season. This has forced drivers on to single narrow lanes for dozens of kilometers at a time.

On several sections of the highway, speed limits have been reduced to between 30 and 40 kilometers per hour, causing frustrating delays for drivers, many of whom may feel tempted to speed up afterward to make up for lost time.

At 518 pesos, The Mérida-Cancún toll highway is one of the most expensive roads in the entire country, second only to the toll highway known as La Marquesa- Ciudad de México. As of yet, no completion date of construction has been offered.
