Mayan train would displace 3,286 families

- April 28, 2021

The current settlement near the track entails a financial risk for the families and for the operation of the train itself; the trip would cost 3,579 million pesos.

The Mayan Train would displace 3,286 households that are on the current right-of-way of the line and the proposed layout for the construction and operation of the railroad, and would have a cost of 3,579 million pesos (mp).

The homes are located in Campeche, Cancún, Candelaria, China, Escárcega, Mérida, Palenque, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Tenosique, Calkiní and Benito Juárez, on 2,294 properties, according to a program of the National Tourism Promotion Fund (Fonatur).

This, which is under consideration by the Investment Unit of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), indicates that the displacement is due to the fact that the settlement carries a risk for the families as well as for the operation of the Mayan Train, as it is high velocity.

Thus, 1,314 homes that are 20 meters or less from each side of the railroad will be relocated this year and by 2022 another 1,972. In addition, the Fonatur considers the construction or acquisition of 2,989 homes so that these families have a suitable property.

Some of these homes will be built on properties that Fonatur will acquire or on others when complete homes already built are acquired; and others within the affected properties, but outside the right-of-way strip when possible, published El Universal.

Of these, 1,345 will be low-income housing, with a kitchen, living-dining room, a bathroom and a half, two or three bedrooms and a parking space, in 71 m2. Another 1,644 will be of a medium type, with a kitchen, living room, dining room, two or three bedrooms, a utility room, two bathrooms, and up to two parking spaces, in 102 m2.
