- December 14, 2022

Due to the increase in passengers arriving by air, the Va y Ven transportation service at the Merida International Airport will be available 24 hours a day to take travelers to the Historic Center, especially those who arrive at very early hours of the day, or for some reason they arrive or leave very late. Informed the regional director of the Southeast Airport Group, Héctor Navarrete Muñoz.

Navarrete Muñoz explained that the buses are elegant, adapted for people with disabilities, and for suitcases, with a rate of $45 pesos per person, but it is a safe way of transportation, in this way users can decide whether to take a taxicab or the buses, since both systems are safe

Navarrete also commented that in other airports in the world there are rail service, but due to the characteristics of the city, in Merida, transportation by buses is much more efficient.

As an example, in the airport of Copenhagen, Denmark, and in other parts of the country, there is a rail service, to take travelers to the city center and hotel zone, the same happens in Malaysia, where the airport is located two hours away, but in Mérida the ”Va y Ven” service is as good as others large airports. Navarrete pointed out, is the result of a coordinated work between the State Government and the authorities of the tourism sector.

Peak figure in December

Navarrete Muñoz said that since last October the number of people using the air transport system has increased, and according to the data, in the first week of December it is possible to break the record of 310,372 tourist of the previous month.

According to this figures, the expansion works must be completed by mid-2023 in response to the demand, in fact, “it was revealed recently by the Stock Market that until November the number of people who used air transportation has exceeded almost in 9 percent, above the figures in 2019, which was the highest figure, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Navarrete Muñoz said that the increase in passengers is due to several aspects, firstly because the tourist attractions of the State, as well as the number of congresses and conventions, then by people interested in investing in the State, especially in Mérida and Valladolid, which are growing very fast, so much so that Mondays and Fridays are the busiest days, and the terminal is bursting.

In addition, there are more airlines and more routes to different destinations in the country and abroad, as an example he mentioned the route to Canada, which began last Tuesday, and before the end of the year it will be announce in detail, how many destinations and air connections Merida will have, and how many passengers were mobilized this year.
