PROGRESO.- February began with the arrival of two cruise ships to Puerto Progreso, in what could be the beginning of a good season for cruise tourism in Yucatan.
The 293-meter-long Radiance of the Seas, operated by the Royal Caribbean shipping company that arrived at 6:43 a.m., set sail at five in the afternoon. The cruise arrived directly from Galveston bound for Cartagena, Colombia, bringing 2,135 passengers and 904 crew members on board.
The second cruise ship that docked at 8:00 a.m. is the World Voyager, 126 meters long and operated by the shipping company Mystic Cruises. On board are 119 European passengers and 113 crew members who arrived from Cozumel and set sail at eight o’clock at night bound for Majahual, Quintana Roo.
Cruise tourism strengthens in Yucatan
The European tourists were transferred to the archaeological zones, so none of them stayed in the port, according to the service providers.
Next week, two other cruise ships will arrive in Progreso, the Carnival Breeze and Carnival Valor, which will arrive next Wednesday, February 8 and Thursday, February 9, according to the Asipona recreational boat arrival schedule.
The service providers commented that it was not a good tourist day, since of the two cruise ships that arrived in Progreso, practically only one counts because the boat that transports European tourists have hired packages to visit the archaeological zones and Merida.
Of the 2,135 passengers traveling on the Radiance of the Seas, only about 300 stayed in the port, of which about 30 toured the city in tourist cars, others were on the Malecón beach, very few occupied palapas and umbrellas, none used the massage services, so the masseuses did not earn anything.
Few sales despite the arrival of cruise ships in Progreso
In the area of bars and restaurants on Calle 80 between 21 and 23 they also had no clientele from the cruise, Canadians who reside in the port as usual arrived at noon to consume drinks and food.
The service providers commented that they only must wait for the weekend that will be long due to the holiday, although on Friday the port will be affected by the north that is announced for that day and its effects would last until Saturday.
