Los Mayas Eternos, A.C., distributed 250 kilos of eggs yesterday among the people who live in a settlement in the Emiliano Zapata Sur neighborhood of the city of Mérida.
With this food support, which consisted of the delivery of 15 pieces of eggs, nearly 250 low-income families living in the settlement, which does not have basic services, benefited. Most of the families live in shacks made of cardboard, sheet metal, and wood, among other materials.
The area is known as “Pueblo Unido” and the Mayas Eternos have visited it on other occasions to deliver blankets.
The photographer Pedro Tec Chim, president of the civil association, indicated that the objective is to deliver a ton of eggs each month to low-income families in different areas. Yesterday they did it with the participation of volunteers, some of them foreigners.
He recalled that in the Ixil they delivered a ton of pieces between mid-February and this month, benefiting 900 families.
He added that eggs do not need refrigeration and are the staple of many families’ diets. It is also one of the products that have increased in price to the point of being inaccessible to many people.
“We are concerned about people’s diet and we know that the egg offers a good supply of protein,” he said.
The Mayas Eternos will be working for three months on this cause in the south of Mérida. They call this action “Donate eggs for my people”.
