The Permanent Committee of the Mérida Carnival will seek through the “Regional Mondays” for UNESCO to grant them recognition as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, reported the president of this body, Óscar Cambranes Basulto.
Each year they receive 200 proposals, which would be those they would compete against to earn this distinction, which not only includes traditions inherited from the past, but also contemporary rural and urban uses characteristic of various cultural groups.
Intangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage constitutes the meaning that makes a community unique, such as traditions, gastronomy, herbalism, literature, scientific and philosophical theories, religion, rituals and music, as well as behavioral patterns.
Yucatan World Heritage Sites
Yucatán has two sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: the pre-Hispanic cities of Chichén Itzá and Uxmal; while Mérida has belonged to the Creative Cities Network since 2019, in the Gastronomy category.
Regarding the Carnival activities, Cambranes Basulto said that tomorrow they are going to launch the “La pachanga” stage, in the softball park of the Mulsay neighborhood, to attack the different parts of the city; On Thursday, October 19, they will participate in the Second Multicultural Gastronomic Meeting, with a new stage “Karaoke Party”, which was very successful on Carnival night.
He added that they will participate in the Expocomercio, Xmatkuil Fair, Paseo de la Ánimas, Parade de las Catrinas and are fine-tuning details to carry out the “Fashion Fest Carnival” for the first time.
