It is no surprise to anyone that global warming causes a melting effect year after year, so in the long term, an increase in sea level is expected.
As the sea level rises, land that was once safely above the tide line is falling below annual flood risk levels, exposing residents to ever-greater threats.
The 13 populations of the state that would end up under water by 2100, according to Climate Central; which are they?
According to Climate Central, in some countries, the invasion of the risk of coastal flooding by the end of the century will drastically increase in number and the proportions of residents potentially exposed to damage, disturbances, and losses during storms.
In the case of the Yucatecan entity, by the year 2100, several municipalities could be underwater, especially those located in the coastal zone:
Celestún, Hunucmá, Progreso, Chicxulub, Ixil, Telchac Puerto, Sinanché, Yobaín, Dzidzantun, Dzilam de Bravo, San Felipe, Río Lagartos, and Tizimín are the municipalities with the greatest threat of sinking.
At the national level, by the year 2100, the coast that runs from Tabasco to Quintana Roo will be below sea level, where thousands of families would lose their heritage and be displaced.
