Mexico is on the point of a significant transformation, with the launch of the Energía Mayakán project, a 700-kilometer gas pipeline that aims to reduce energy costs for millions of users in the southeastern region. The ambitious project, led by French company ENGIE México and the Mexican Federal Commission of Electricity (CFE), promises to bring about a new era of energy efficiency and economic growth.
The Energía Mayakán pipeline will stretch from the Petroquímico de Ciudad Pemex complex in Tabasco to the CFE’s power generation facilities in Campeche, passing through the Yucatán Peninsula. The project is expected to increase the region’s daily gas consumption by 567 million cubic feet, equivalent to filling the Azteca stadium in Mexico City approximately 13.38 times.
The pipeline’s expansion will not only benefit the energy sector but also have a significant impact on the local economy. According to ENGIE México’s Country Manager, Felisa Ros, the project will enable the region to become a hub for industrial development, attracting foreign investment and creating thousands of jobs.
The Energía Mayakán pipeline will not only provide energy security but also promote economic growth through nearshoring, a trend where companies relocate their supply chains closer to key markets. According to Ernesto Herrera Novelo, the Secretary of Economic Development and Work in Yucatán, “The arrival of more natural gas will provide the necessary energy input for industrial processes, making it possible for heavy industry to settle in our state.”
The project’s launch ceremony was attended by top government officials, including the CFE’s Director General, Manuel Bartlett Díaz; ENGIE México’s Country Manager, Felisa Ros; and the Governor of Campeche, Layda Sansores San Román. The event marked the beginning of a new era for energy efficiency and economic growth in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.
