The emergency number 9-1-1, operated by the Yucatecan police, received over 300,000 calls in the first three months of the year, but a staggering 65% of these calls were improper; that is, false or prank calls. This means that despite being a resource for emergencies, many people use it for things unrelated to any situation that poses a threat to someone’s integrity, security, or life.
This also presents a problem for emergency services, as it prevents help from reaching those who are actually in danger promptly. For this reason, there are national protocols homologated to international standards that help improve the process of receiving calls and dispatching police units, ambulances, or fire trucks.
There also have been complaints from 9-1-1 users about the lack of prompt attention and the numerous questions asked by operators before dispatching an emergency unit to someone who needs it.
