Despite the threatening weather conditions that threatened to cancel events on the coast, such as the “Second Kite and Papagayo Festival”, beach days on Saturday and Sunday turned out to be the highest in terms of seasonal vacation activity in Progreso.

Specifically, on Sunday morning, visitors began arriving continuously, mostly from Mérida city.

It’s worth noting that even at the last kilometers of the federal highway leading to the port, several police units were needed to direct traffic.

In the words of workers asked about whether there was more movement, unlike the first days of July where various natural phenomena affected tourism activity, this good moment has been confirmed up to the end of the month.

“We’re in a good time. Just last week we had three consecutive cruise ship days. Apart from that, several Mexican bathers have arrived. We’ve also had tours from different parts of the country with at least 100 people. Since 2019, we haven’t had this much work, and I hope we’ll have a good closing to the vacation season,” said Gaspar Alonzo.

Regarding the “Second Kite and Papagayos Festival”, there was equal attraction for national and international tourism, as the giant figures flying away from the massive letters forming the name of the municipality caught attention.

“There were plenty of people. What I liked most were the giant figures that launched. I had low expectations for the workshops, but we ended up learning a lot about paper art. We hope the festival will return next year,” said Aracelly Pérez, member of Progreso’s Diversity Committee, which had representation with a “kite” carrying the colors of the flag characterizing the LGBT community.

In the afternoon, activity centered around International Malecón where “Poseidón”, a highly sought-after figure is, taking photos was the main purpose. Even at sunset, several police units from different bases remained on site to prevent tragedies among bathers.
