Yucatán State Health Department Takes Measures to Prevent Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya

- July 22, 2024

To maintain the necessary actions to prevent dengue, Zika and chikungunya, the Yucatan State Health Department (SSY) informs that measures of fogging will be carried out in municipalities within the state from July 22 to 26 as part of its strategy for preventing the transmission of these diseases by the mosquito vector.

The Director of Prevention and Health Protection, Carlos Isaac Hernández Fuentes, detailed that the weekly fogging schedule will be distributed as follows: on Monday, July 22, fogging will be carried out in the municipal seats of Dzilam de Bravo, Santa Clara, Chabihau and San Crisanto, as well as the commissaries of Dzidzantún, Yobaín and Sinanché.

Similarly, he added that on Tuesday, July 23, brigades will work in Progreso and its commissary Chicxulub Puerto, as well as in Pisté commissary of Tinum and the municipality of Oxkutzcab.

On Wednesday, July 24, actions will continue in Progreso and its commissaries of Yucalpetén and Chelem, as well as in the municipalities of Yaxcabá and Tekax.

He also mentioned that on Thursday, July 25, activities will proceed in the commissaries progreseñas of Chelem and Chuburná Puerto, as well as in the municipalities of Celestún, Temozón and Tekax.

Finally, on Friday, July 26, actions will be carried out in Sisal commissary of Hunucmá and in Uayma.

The health official invited the population to collaborate by keeping their yards clean and eliminating containers where water can accumulate, which is a complementary measure to avoid the proliferation of the mosquito vector of dengue, Zika and chikungunya.

He also emphasized avoiding dumping trash and broken objects at street corners, as the waste collection campaign concluded days ago and an extraordinary effort is being made in coordination with municipal authorities for the retrieval of remaining debris.

The official reported that a series of actions have been taken so far this year for the benefit of the population, including larval control of 243,644 homes, nebulization of 12,682 hectares of surface area with fumigation vehicles and 5,162 households.

He also highlighted that dengue is a tropical disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which deposits its eggs in stagnant water containers such as buckets, tires, pots and tinacos, so he recommended to the population to take this factor into consideration because the water from the rains favors the insect laying its larvae in flower vases, pots, containers and useless objects in yards where mosquitoes capable of transmitting the disease are reproduced.

It is worth noting that there are four types of dengue virus, which means that a person can contract the disease up to four times in their lifetime. In Yucatan, types 1 and 2 are the most common, but the entry of serotype 3 increases the risk of infection.
