Farewell to Duke, the Faithful Canine Guardian of Chichén Itzá

- July 25, 2024

Duke, a loyal canine guardian, lived on the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá for 14 years before passing away. He was a happy and playful dog who spent his days caring for the area alongside other dogs.

The news of Duke’s death was reported by José Antonio Keb Cetina, one of the collaborators at the archaeological site, who stated that since his arrival in Chichén Itzá, he had been a joyful and energetic dog who always occupied himself with taking care of the area.

Duke spent his entire life in Chichén Itzá and began to show physical and health problems due to old age around 14 years old. His death was confirmed on Monday, July 22nd.

“I am grateful for having had him with us for 14 years,” said José Antonio in his social media post. “Thank you for lending us this time. Rest in peace, friend.”

Duke was chosen as the guardian of Chichén Itzá through a rescue and defense program for animals in Yucatán, and he received care and food from the Patronato Cultur, four civil associations dedicated to animal rights, and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). He was recognized by employees at the archaeological site who worked together with other dogs that lived on the premises.

A group of dogs lives at the archaeological site, including Osita, Cachimba, and Pinto, who are still living there.
