Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal announced the start of construction on the final segment of the Progresso Elevated Viaduct, a project that will reduce traffic congestion, accidents, and road deterioration in the city.

The governor shared that work has begun on laying the beams for the final section of the viaduct, which is part of a larger infrastructure project aimed at improving transportation in the region. The project includes 58 support pillars, 46 of which are located within the city and 12 in the estero area.

Once completed, the elevated road will provide an alternative route for vehicles traveling between Mérida and Progresso, reducing congestion on local streets. Additionally, the project includes the construction of terraplenes, which will connect the access and exit points to the Mérida-Progreso highway.

Construction is ongoing in several areas, including:

– Laying beams in both the city and estero areas

– Supplying materials for the construction of terraplenes

– Pouring concrete on the road surface (or driving area) where beams have been installed

The project will also alleviate noise pollution and reduce air pollution caused by the daily passage of 12,000 vehicles and 1,400 heavy cargo containers that travel through the city.

The 2.7-kilometer viaduct will connect the Mérida-Progreso highway to the remote terminal at the port, built by ICA Constructora under the supervision of the Yucatán State Highway Infrastructure Institute (INCAY).

To ensure traffic flow and minimize disruptions, personnel from the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) are on site to direct traffic and prevent accidents.

As a result, there will be temporary traffic restrictions in place since Sunday, July 28. Vehicles traveling along Avenida 80 towards Mérida should take the following detour:

– Arrive at the intersection and turn left onto the Mérida-Progreso highway

– Continue on the highway until reaching the designated section where the viaduct is being built

– Turn right to rejoin the highway and continue towards Mérida

Heavy vehicles are advised to follow a different route:

– From the intersection, take Avenida Chicxulub and head towards Conkal

– From there, exit onto the highway that leads to Mérida.
