The most popular destinations for international, national, and local tourists are Mérida, Chichén Itzá, Izamal, and Valladolid.
According to the Mexican Hotel Association of Yucatán (AMHY), the summer vacation period in Yucatán reported a slight decline of 4% compared to last year. However, there are cities and archaeological sites that receive the most visitors, with a reported 46% occupancy rate as of June.
Juan José Martín Pacheco, president of the Mexican Hotel Association of Yucatán, stated that as of June, the state maintained a 46% hotel occupancy rate, and July is expected to see an increase. However, they will wait until the end of the month to count the number of visitors, as most tourists are visiting the beaches.
Despite the general 46% occupancy rate, Mérida reported the highest number of tourist visits with a 49% hotel occupancy rate. Other municipalities, magical towns, and communities reported an average of 27% of visitor numbers.
The beaches of Yucatán, the magical town of Izamal, the city of Valladolid, Mérida, and the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá led the list of international, national, and local visitors during the summer season in June and July.
“The summer is always a period when regional, national, and foreign visitors arrive to the state, generating economic income for other sectors such as services and gastronomy,” said Juan José Martín Pacheco.
Yucatán’s hotel offer is extensive, with 91 hotels available, offering 5,621 rooms. Of these, 25 hotels are located in Mérida, with 707 rooms available. The remaining 66 hotels are distributed among the municipalities, magical towns, and beach areas of the state.
Although the hotel occupancy rate for the first half of the year reported a slight decline of 4%, and remained at 46% in June, it is considered by the Mexican Hotel Association of Yucatán as a positive influx of tourism. They expect that the second semester, with the arrival of the Maya Train, will see an increase in hotel occupancy during the autumn and winter seasons.
