Mauricio Sauri Vivas, head of the State Health Secretariat (SSY) in Yucatan, emphasized that the main goal is to combat the appearance of the Aedes aegypti mosquito vector and prevent severe cases that can be fatal.
“We’re working continuously and maintaining our efforts to reduce the number of dengue fever cases, particularly those that are not life-threatening,” Sauri Vivas explained.
In 2023, Yucatan reported over 10,000 cases of dengue fever and 71 deaths. To prevent a repeat situation, state authorities reinforced their actions this year.
As of now, the state has confirmed 172 dengue fever cases and zero fatalities. However, one case is currently under investigation by federal authorities, while six others have been ruled out.
To address the increased rainfall in June and July, preventive measures were strengthened to prevent mosquito breeding sites. This effort has maintained a stable number of infections.
“Over the past three weeks, we’ve seen stability in our numbers,” Sauri Vivas stated. “We’re reinforcing our efforts, particularly along borders with neighboring states where activity is high.”
The municipalities of Tekantó and San Felipe have reported the highest incidence of dengue fever cases. Hocabá and Huhí are now considered high-risk areas.
To combat dengue fever, authorities urge citizens to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites in their homes, such as objects that can collect water.
