The new “Program for the Rights and Inclusion of People with Disabilities” at the Yucatán State Human Rights Commission (CODHEY) will be led by Rodrigo Chan Cua, a visually impaired individual. He was appointed to this position by the Ombudsperson, María Guadalupe Méndez Correa, effective August 1st.
The program’s purpose is to promote, protect, defend, study, and research human rights-related issues affecting people with disabilities (PwDs) within CODHEY.
CODHEY President emphasizes that appointing a PwD to lead the program satisfies the demands of civil society groups advocating for PwDs to occupy leadership positions. Méndez Correa highlights Rodrigo Chan Cua’s qualifications in Law and Human Rights from Marista University, as well as his experience as a trainer at various institutions.
This new initiative builds on CODHEY’s previous efforts to promote PwD rights but represents a significant step forward by creating a dedicated program for their guarantee, respect, promotion, and study. Rodrigo Chan Cua holds a Law degree and Master’s in Human Rights from Marista University of Mérida. He previously worked at the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation and has been a trainer at CODHEY since 2007.
Chan Cua expressed his gratitude for the appointment and acknowledged its great responsibility, which is to promote the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities. The Coordinator emphasized that programs for PwDs should be led by individuals who have disabilities, as they possess lived experiences and understanding of their real needs.
Chan Cua will focus on impactful initiatives for people with disabilities, their families, and society in general, within his first year as program leader. He aims to address pressing issues and improve the lives of those he represents.
