The Maya Bee Alliance, through a statement published on its social media, reported that during March of last year, 769 hives belonging to 22 beekeepers from various communities in Tizimín, Yucatán were affected.
According to experts, “these beehives were located in apiaries in four different regions of the municipality, near farms owned by the Enerall company, which was growing corn under irrigation at that time.”
The cause of death of the bees was found to be a poisoning with the insecticide Fipronil. This pesticide is prohibited in dozens of countries for being highly dangerous to bees” they explained.
Finally, it was clarified that complaints had already been filed with PROFEPA , however, they assure that the authorities still have not implemented any security measures to address the problem.
