After allegedly threatening violence, teachers from the Sindicato Nacional de los Trabajadores de la Educación (SNTE) union were evicted from their headquarters on Yucalpetén Street in Mérida, Yucatán. They warn that if their demands are not met, they will return to school with “their arms down.”
On Tuesday evening, the teachers arrived at the building and filed a complaint about the alleged violence. However, they were surprised to find the building closed with a sign indicating services would resume on August 19.
Again, the teachers accused Secretary General BJ Emmanuel González of being behind the intimidation and accusations against them in an attempt to avoid responsibility for their demands for better salaries and benefits. They claimed he exercises authoritarian and repressive leadership, prioritizing power and control over the representation of worker interests.
The teachers now fear for their physical integrity and ask society and authorities to be on the lookout for them; they blame the Secretary General and Secretary Giselle Chi Centeno for not taking responsibility for their work.
It is worth noting that they are also seeking the dismissal of the Secretary General for failing to do his job.
