The development of new investment lots in Telchac Puerto has raised concerns about the destruction of wetlands on Yucatán’s northern coast. According to satellite images taken by Centiel-2, hectares of protected wetlands have been deforested for real estate projects. This has sparked outrage among environmentalists and authorities.
A user on the social network X (formerly Twitter), identified as Pandita Rojo with the account @eitmx, surprised his 3,656 followers and national and international environmentalists. The user works at Social Security and shares topics on photography, health, and tree defense. He frequently shares satellite images and weather forecasts in Yucatán, but on Saturday evening, he raised alarms with this photograph that shows the large-scale destruction of coastal wetlands in Telchac Puerto. The image highlights the rapid expansion of real estate businesses on the coast, with one large housing complex being built in the protected area.
These developments are linked to Grupo Inverco and its partners, including politicians and public notaries who have been accused of fraud and breach of contract by hundreds of clients.
In 2022, Mexico designated a new Ramsar Site, covering 54,776.72 hectares of wetlands on Yucatán’s northern coast. The site protects various species of aquatic birds and fish, as well as coastal estuarine systems that are essential for human life.
The invasion of these protected areas with impunity is attributed to the real estate boom in Telchac Puerto. Wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, providing natural flood control systems, and barriers against hurricanes.
