By agreement of the Yucatán State Electoral Tribunal (TEYY), extraordinary elections must be called in Hunucmá, Progreso, and Izamal. However, in the latter, the same candidate from the PRI and PAN, Warnel May Escobedo, who is seeking re-election, will not be allowed to compete unless the Regional Court in Xalapa of the Federal Electoral Tribunal decides otherwise, assuming these cases are taken to that second instance.
According to the resolution issued a few moments ago by the local electoral magistrates, there would be four extraordinary elections this year, considering that they also annulled the municipal electoral process in Chichimilá, which is already under review in the Xalapa Regional Court.
To conclude the last remaining appeals in the TEEY, in a public session yesterday, they decided to annul the municipal elections for the three pending municipalities: Hunucmá, Progreso, and Izamal. In these cases, the State Congress will appoint Municipal Councils while new municipal authorities are elected, pending confirmation in Xalapa.
Except in Izamal, the same candidates who initially competed could run in the other three municipalities once the corresponding calls are issued in the coming days.
Why were the elections annulled?
The decision was made because constitutional principles were violated. In the case of Izamal, the common candidate from the PRI and PAN, Warnel May Escobar, will not be able to participate in the extraordinary election due to violating electoral restrictions and exerting violence and pressure on voters. In Hunucmá, the security and regularity of the chain of custody for the electoral packages were compromised.
