Some of the most dangerous avenues are located on the Periférico Ring Road in Mérida. According to a study by the organization Estrategia Misión Cero, which analyzes data from the insurer Axa between 2015 and 2023, three road points in Mérida are considered among the top 100 locations with the highest accident rates nationwide.
The study maps out roads where accidents are most concentrated, and three of these points are in Mérida, accounting for a total of 573 traffic accidents over the past eight years.
Among the top 100 high-risk road points in the country, the Periférico Ring Road and Jacinto Canek Avenue in Mérida stand out, with 213 vehicle collisions occurring in that area. Another critical point is the intersection of the Periférico Ring Road and Yucatán Avenue, ranking as the most hazardous road point due to 185 recorded traffic accidents in recent years. Additionally, the intersection of Calle 33 and Calle 31 Diagonal in Mérida has also seen 185 traffic accidents, earning it the 87th spot for collisions nationwide.
At the national level, the Federal Highway to Puebla in the direction of Cuacnopalan – Tehuacán has the highest number of registered accidents, totaling 965 over recent years. It is followed by the Ensenada-Tijuana Highway, where 798 vehicles have collided.
However, the entity with the most high-risk road points in the country is Mexico City, with over 23 highways accumulating hundreds of accidents.
The study highlights the need for increased vigilance in road safety for vehicle users, according to Axa. It also encourages municipal governments across the country to utilize open data and work on improving cartographic information related to traffic accidents.
