The port of Progreso saw a decent influx of visitors this Saturday, with expectations that a new record will be broken on Sunday. However, compared to the previous week, the turnout was lower. Local merchants and service providers are hopeful for a boost in business on Sunday to help balance their economy.
Progreso residents had anticipated around 4,000 beachgoers for this Saturday, given that it’s the final stretch of the vacation season. However, only approximately 1,500 people arrived.
It is expected that visitor numbers will increase on Sunday.
Last week, approximately 3,000 visitors were recorded at the international boardwalk. Despite this, sales were lower than in the previous season, which some attribute to the growing number of tourist destinations in the region.
Meanwhile, workers in the hotel sector reported a 15% to 20% increase in reservations during the past week. They anticipate a slight uptick in activity during the final week of the summer season.
