Blockade Halts Yucatecan Pilgrims’ Journey to San Cristóbal de las Casas

- November 24, 2024

Four young pilgrims from Tenabo, Yucatán, were unable to fulfill their religious promise to begin their pilgrimage with the lighting of the torch in San Cristóbal de las Casas due to a blockade at the entrance to the Agua Azul tourist center. The blockade resulted from a conflict over the appointment of the Bachajón ejido commissioner.

The pilgrims, members of the torchbearer group “Los Hijos de María,” began their journey on November 15 with the goal of reaching San Cristóbal to honor the Virgin of Guadalupe. Identified as Alejandro, Jesús Orlando, Diego de la Cruz, and Carlos Pérez, they traveled thousands of kilometers by bicycle from Tenabo, Yucatán. However, on November 21, they encountered a roadblock at the tourist center, preventing their passage.

Protesters blocking the road informed the pilgrims that, for security reasons, they could not continue their journey. Despite their insistence on fulfilling their promise, the blockade conditions and local recommendations forced them to turn back. The young pilgrims decided to return to Palenque, where they fulfilled their promise at the Santo Domingo de Guzmán Parish, offering thanks for the protection during their long journey.

Although frustrated by not reaching their original destination, the pilgrims emphasized the importance of faith that motivates them to continue their journey back to Yucatán. Initially planning to start their pilgrimage in San Cristóbal, unforeseen circumstances led them to adapt and find an alternative route, making them the first torchbearers to begin their journey from Palenque before the Guadalupe festivities in December.
