This vibrant academic institution has made significant strides since its inception in 2017. The National School of Higher Studies (ENES) Mérida Unit stands out as a committed hub for interdisciplinary research and cutting-edge teaching, contributing to social and environmental change.
ENES Mérida offers seven undergraduate programs: Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Ecology, Applied Geography, Sustainable Coastal Zone Management, Intercultural Development and Management, and Applied Sociology. These curricula are designed with a comprehensive approach that combines theory and practice, preparing students for their future roles in society. A notable example is the recently introduced Applied Sociology program, which reflects the collaborative efforts of UNAM institutions.
The university’s laboratory infrastructure plays a pivotal role in integrating teaching, applied research, and student development. The laboratories feature state-of-the-art facilities for physics, geology, biology, ecology, molecular biology, organic chemistry, environmental quality, computing, and geomatics. These specialized spaces facilitate the acquisition of experimental skills, environmental analysis techniques, molecular genetics, geospatial modeling, and emerging technologies.
The faculty at ENES Mérida comprises 47 full-time professors, with 97% being members of the National System of Researchers. This is a testament to the institution’s commitment to excellence in teaching and research. Between 2019 and 2021, the faculty published numerous articles in indexed journals, books, chapters, and dissemination materials, highlighting areas such as ecology, sustainability, data science, and intercultural studies.
The current undergraduate enrollment stands at 500 students, with a strong female participation of almost 62%. This diverse community is actively engaged in academic, social, and community initiatives. The university’s programs link classroom learning with work in rural communities, social organizations, and local institutions.
Notably, the Volunteer Program has grown significantly, with over 120 participants in cultural, sports, and health promotion activities. Additionally, the Comprehensive Health Care Program provides physical, nutritional, and mental health services to students.
