Merchants at the Lucas de Gálvez Market are seeing a significant increase in sales, with a 30% rise in seafood purchases, particularly on Fridays. The high demand has led to an approximate $30 peso price hike per kilogram.
Locatarios of various seafood stalls report that customers are buying more fish and shrimp than any other product. Due to the increased demand, some seafood items have seen substantial price increases:
* Fresh dogfish: $100 per kilogram
* Raw octopus: $220 per kilogram
* Cooked octopus: $240 per kilogram
* Shrimp: between $140 and $250 pesos per kilogram (dependent on size)
* Red snapper: $160 per kilogram
* Grouper: $220 per kilogram
* Crab: $150 per kilogram
* Frozen fish fillet: $150 per kilogram
* Fresh fish fillet: $220 per kilogram
Despite the price increase, consumers say they continue to purchase seafood due to their custom of abstaining from meat during Lent. Merchants are benefiting from the increased demand and expect it to continue until the end of April, as many families in Yucatan observe Lent for a full month.
