In a poignant ceremony held yesterday afternoon, the U.S. Consulate General in Mérida marked the end of an era as it lowered its flag for the final time at its former headquarters on 60th Street. The event signified the closure of one chapter and the beginning of a new diplomatic era in the region.

The symbolic ceremony was led by Justen A. Thomas, Consul General and Principal U.S. Official in Mérida, who was accompanied by local authorities, former officials, special guests, and members of the press. During the event, Thomas extended gratitude to the Government of the State of Yucatán, the Ministry of Public Security, and the City of Mérida for their unwavering support throughout the years.

Thomas also paid tribute to Mr. Abraham Jorge, whose property on 60th Street served as the site of the consulate’s inauguration in November 2006 after it previously operated from the iconic Paseo de Montejo. The consul reflected on the importance of closing this chapter and embarking on a new one with unwavering conviction to strengthen ties between Mexico and the United States.

Come Tuesday, May 6th, the consulate will officially relocate to a state-of-the-art building situated in the Via Montejo area, north of Mérida. Located near The Harbor Plaza, the new facility boasts an impressive investment of $210 million, solidifying its position as one of the most significant consular infrastructures in the country.

The modern location is set to triple customer service capacity, boasting more windows, larger spaces, and advanced technology. This upgrade promises a substantial reduction in wait times for procedures such as visa applications and services catering to U.S. citizens. “We are working diligently to facilitate travel and foster ties between Mexico and the United States through family, tourism, and business relations,” Thomas concluded, emphasizing the enduring friendship between the two nations.

The relocation comes on the heels of a new era of cooperation between Mexico and the United States, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relationships. As the U.S. Consulate General in Mérida embarks on this fresh chapter, it is poised to provide enhanced services and foster deeper ties between the two countries.
