Power Outages Spark Protests in Yucatán and Campeche as Residents Demand Better Service from CFE

Residents in the states of Yucatán and Campeche have taken to the streets to protest frequent power outages caused by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). The blackouts, which have become increasingly common due to high temperatures reaching up to 43 degrees Celsius in the region, are causing widespread disruptions.

In Mérida, residents of the Zazil-Há and Cinco Colonias neighborhoods blocked a major street on Thursday, demanding that CFE officials take immediate action to restore power. The protesters reported that they have been experiencing frequent blackouts for two weeks, lasting several hours and affecting their daily lives.

“We are fed up with the lack of electricity in our neighborhood,” said one resident. “We are tired of living without basic services like power and water. If CFE does not come forward to restore power, we will continue closing streets as a pressure measure.”

CFE workers arrived in the Las Américas neighborhood last night to repair damage caused by a blackout that left dozens of homes without electricity until noon on Wednesday.

According to officials, the outages are constant during the hot season due to overloaded connections in new neighborhoods. CFE employees stated that they have not been authorized to use a substation to improve service, exacerbating the problem.

In addition to power outages, families in this neighborhood do not have access to drinking water, worsening their situation amid the heat wave.

Meanwhile, in Campeche, residents of the Polvorín neighborhood demonstrated outside CFE offices on Resurgimiento Avenue, demanding the immediate replacement of a damaged transformer that has left them without electricity for three days.

Residents reported that they have been experiencing frequent blackouts for over a month, which have intensified in recent days due to the intense heat. They stated that they have reported the problem multiple times to CFE officials but received no timely response.

The protesters demanded an inspection of power lines to prevent further blackouts and called on CFE to take immediate action to address the situation.

CFE’s lackluster response has left residents frustrated and desperate for a solution. As temperatures continue to soar, the pressure on the agency to improve its service will only intensify.
