Mérida Residents Stage Protest Over Prolonged Power Outage

A group of residents from Mérida’s Esperanza and Cortés Sarmiento neighborhoods have taken to the streets to protest a prolonged power outage that has left their homes without electricity for nearly a week.

Frustrated by the lack of assistance from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), the residents blocked Circuito Colonias Avenue, one of Mérida’s busiest thoroughfares, at the intersection of 63 A and 63 B streets near Plaza Oriente. The blockade, which is affecting traffic flow on both lanes, has been in place since Friday.

The residents claim that their electricity service was disrupted last Tuesday and fear that if not resolved promptly, it could cause damage to their appliances. Despite their pleas for help, the CFE has failed to respond, prompting the residents to take action.

The Ministry of Public Security (SSP) has reported the closure of Circuito Colonias Avenue due to a demonstration over power outages. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes, while also exercising caution when driving through the affected zone.

The protest highlights the residents’ desperation for a solution to their electricity woes and serves as a reminder of the CFE’s responsibility to provide reliable service to its customers.
