A breakthrough has been made in the fight against organized crime in Mexico, as authorities have arrested “El Fefe”, a notorious leader of a gang operating in Quintana Roo. The detainee, identified as 36-year-old Francisco Javier “N” from Tabasco, had been on the run since 2018.

According to the Yucatán Investigative Police and agents from the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), El Fefe was linked to a range of serious crimes, including carrying firearms and explosives, extortion, and homicide. The suspect was arrested at a checkpoint on the Mérida-Cancún federal toll highway while traveling in a vehicle.

After his arrest, Yucatecan authorities handed him over to agents from the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC) for transfer to Cancún, where he is set to face justice. This development marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against organized crime in Mexico’s southeast region.

The arrest of El Fefe comes as the Quintana Roo state faces growing concern over the proliferation of cartels operating in the area. Once a territory controlled by the Gulf Cartel, the region has fragmented into various rival cells, including Los Talibanes, Los Zetas Vieja Escuela, and others.

Major drug cartels such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel also maintain a significant presence in Quintana Roo. A recent report by Lantia Intelligence reveals that the Gulf Cartel has disintegrated into at least 14 different gangs operating across 11 Mexican states, further complicating law enforcement efforts.

The arrest of El Fefe serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment of authorities to dismantling organized crime networks and bringing those responsible for violent crimes to justice. As the region continues to grapple with the challenges posed by cartel activity, this development offers hope that those responsible will be held accountable.
