Tensions ran high in the Los Reyes neighborhood of Mérida yesterday as residents took to the streets to express their frustration over the slow pace of a homicide investigation. The protest, which saw 46th Street and 19th Street closed off, was sparked by the lack of progress in the case of Ameth, known affectionately as “Mi Sangre,” whose body was discovered on May 5 at lot number 580.
Residents voiced their anger over the swift removal of evidence from the crime scene by authorities, claiming that it not only hindered the investigation but also put the community at risk. They alleged that illegal substances were being sold at the location, further exacerbating concerns about public safety.
The presence of relatives of the accused perpetrator at the scene added fuel to the fire, with some residents expressing fear that the killer remains on the loose. “El Richard,” identified as the prime suspect in the case, was reportedly seen in the vicinity by witnesses and family members.
A heated exchange took place between neighbors and officers from the State Investigation Police (PEI), who attended the scene to speak with residents. A neighbor accused a PEI agent of secretly recording them without consent, while another officer claimed that they needed evidence of their visit.
The protest culminated in the cordon-off of the property by members of the State Attorney General’s Office, who deployed security guards to the area. Neighbors have called for the immediate arrest of “El Richard,” and are holding the PEI accountable for any potential retaliation that may arise from their public complaint.
In a desperate bid to bring justice to Ameth’s family, residents continue to demand answers and action from authorities in this high-profile case.
