MÉRIDA, EXTREMADURA, Spain — The deep cultural brotherhood between Mérida, Spain, and Mérida, Yucatán, has been strengthened with the inauguration of a new symbol of friendship: the iconic Yucatecan “Tú y Yo” (You and Me) conversation chairs.
The installation was unveiled at the Parque de las Méridas del Mundo (Park of the Méridas of the World), a public square dedicated to celebrating the global cities that share the Mérida name. Crafted by master artisan and mosaicist Luisa Díaz Liviano, the piece directly replicates Yucatán’s traditional double-sided chairs, designed to promote face-to-face dialogue and cultural exchange.
The official ceremony was led by the mayor of Mérida, Spain, Antonio Rodríguez Osuna. Key dignitaries in attendance included the Mexican consul to Spain, Heenry C. Valdivia Sandoval, alongside local officials and representatives from the Association of Mexicans of Extremadura.
Speakers at the event highlighted that the chairs symbolize more than just an architectural feature; they represent a dedicated space for gathering, reflection, and ongoing institutional cooperation.
This artistic tribute serves to reaffirm the historical ties and mutual appreciation uniting both communities across the Atlantic.
