Mérida’s Soho gallery presents the exhibition “Wired and Reclaimed”, which seeks to raise funds for the construction of eco-bricks that will be used in the construction of vegetable gardens for 35 families in an irregular settlement in the San Antonio Xluch III neighborhood, located in the south of the city.

Adele Aguirre, the founder of this important cultural space located on Calle 60 (between 43 and 41), indicated that this collection focuses on sustainability at an artistic level since through recycling and care for the environment, they will seek to make a positive impact on the neediest people.

“Soho is one of the most recognized galleries in the city with more than 12 years of presence in Mérida and has represented national and international artists. On this occasion, SOHO presents four talented artists: Otón Rivera, Víctor Dávalos, Luca De Pravato and Sandra Dooley, who give life and artistic creation to discarded elements,” said Adele aguirre.

In that sense, she explained that “the four artists give a whole new meaning to sustainable art” as each piece is made from mountains of plastic waste, paper, lids, cans, clothes, electronics, and anything else that can be found in the piles of unwanted items created by our modern society.

In addition, he indicated that artists Victor and Otón will display the materials used in each piece as they demonstrate their creative process.

Art with a cause

She emphasized that a percentage of the sales of these works will go to Yucatán Giving Outreach’s (YGO) sustainable community project in an irregular settlement in the San Antonio Xluch III neighborhood, located south of Mérida.

With these resources, they will finance the elaboration of eco-bricks whose raw material will be plastic bags, pet bottles, and other recyclable elements, with which they will build 35 vegetable gardens for an equal number of families, in order to contribute to their self-sustainability and combat the economic and food backwardness in which they find themselves.

The inauguration of the exhibition will take place on Saturday, February 4 at 7:30 p.m. at SoHo Galleries.

Regarding the artists, Adele Aguirre explained that Otón creates fascinating sculptures of wire, and each piece expresses a message of social and spiritual significance.

Luca combs the beaches and hotel spaces for towels and scraps of string and rope to create his works, while Sandra creates from scraps of fabric she salvages from tattered clothing in her native Cuba.
