On social networks, the controversial comment of a Facebook user has begun to go viral. The Yucatecan community has been divided between those who share the same opinion and those who point out that it is ‘classism’ on the part of the person who made the comment.

As is well known, Yucatan is a state with Mayan roots; which we can see from the smallest as the accent or even the shape of the head. Likewise, the community is home to the descendants of the Mayan ancestors, who bear surnames such as Ek, Naal, Balam or Cauich.

These are surnames that speak of the history behind the community. However, the young man dismissed this aspect through a Facebook post in which he stated:

(OK, YOU ARE PRETY BUT NON OF MY KIDS WILL HAVE A SURMANE SUCH AS COHUO EK BALAM)

Many Yucatecan users commented pointing out his classism, since he sought to do less to a person for carrying a surname of Mayan origin. Users described this type of comment as unfortunate, mentioning that the ‘Ek, Couoh or Balam’ is carried with pride by the ancestors.

Other users went for the jugular vein at Gabriel, even mentioning the misspelling of using ‘Osea’ instead of ‘O sea’ as it is spelled correctly. There were also those who commented that he did not have the right to make such a statement when he had the “nopal” on his face.

There was another part of people who laughed at the comment and even shared it, alluding to the fact that they shared that opinion.
