The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) has issued fines to 26 industrial pig farms in the Yucatán Peninsula for not complying with environmental laws.

This was in response to a formal petition by the Center for Biological Diversity and Greenpeace Mexico due to the pollution generated by this activity.

A statement indicates that environmental groups from the Peninsula asked the government to accept the request of 21 Mayan communities demanding a moratorium on all new approvals of industrial pig farms in the states of Yucatán, Campeche, and Quintana Roo.

Now PROFEPA has issued sanctions to all the inspected facilities, and the agency affirmed that “they will continue to address the problems of pig farm development in the Yucatán Peninsula.”

“Mexico should have acted earlier, but I am relieved that measures are being applied to these horrible pig facilities,” said Hannah Connor, deputy director of environmental health at the Center for Biological Diversity of Greenpeace.

They seek to resolve issues of air and water quality, biodiversity, and human health, although Greenpeace indicates that officials have not yet responded to their request.

“I hope that the environmental authorities finally consult with the indigenous communities and that the moratorium requested by the Mayan peoples is issued.”
