More than 50 schools in Yucatán begin an indefinite labor strike

- June 18, 2024

Teachers in Yucatán have once again started protests to demand an increase, now regarding their end-of-year bonus.

More than 50 primary schools entered an indefinite labor strike today seeking dialogue with the State Government, while this morning representatives from each educational committee marched from San Juan park to the Government Palace.

The movement’s representative, Lilia Canul, reported that they are seeking an end-of-year bonus increase to 90 days, as well as a working table for teachers from state-level subsystems.

‘This movement is separate from the negotiation table that is awaiting resolution at the federal level; they are different activities, but the goal is the same: salary improvement for education workers,’ she pointed out.

She indicated that due to the absence of union leaders, teachers will be taking actions to achieve agreements. In this case, after taking over sections 33 and 57 of the SNTE in past weeks, today they gathered at the Government Palace where they delivered a statement about their situation and requests.

She shared that the salary increase they obtained was 10.08 to the base salary, but it is not what was considered in the National Demand List of the union, as they asked for 30 percent.

Teachers and education workers in Yucatán will receive the salary increase authorized by the federal government, which will be paid retroactively to January 2024 and will be made effective in the coming days.
