The Merida City Council, through the Public Services Department, reported that due to yesterday’s rain and strong winds, a 100-year-old Ficus tree fell over the area of felines at El Centenario Zoo, without any harm being caused to the animals housed there.
In response to this incident, security protocols were activated to ensure the well-being of the animals which remained safe in their enclosures, Due to the rain and damage, assessment was carried out to ensure that the visitors were not put in danger.
The Centennial Zoo staff reported that the tree’s fall damaged the felid enclosure structure, so the area was cordoned off to prevent risks while animal caregivers isolated the two felines in a quarantine zone until their habitat is restored.
The Park and Gardens squads from the Municipal Public Services Department are working on removing branches and trunks of the Ficus tree, which had been standing in the park since its inauguration in 1910, but unfortunately did not withstand the strong winds this time.
Due to these works, the zoo area and train were closed this Friday, June 28.
