A violent altercation broke out early this morning at the port of Celestún, Yucatán, when local fishermen clashed with outsiders who have been settling in the community. The dispute ended with the burning of fishing nets and boats.
According to eyewitnesses, the disturbance was a manifestation of anger among many locals against individuals from other towns, primarily Champotón, who arrive in Celestún but fail to respect or behave like members of the community. In some cases, these outsiders have been accused of committing crimes, such as vandalism and violence against residents.
Residents of Celestún, who wished to remain anonymous due to fear of reprisals, claim that outsiders are drawn to the port by its fishing activities. While acknowledging that some may be seeking a better life for their families, they argue that these newcomers fail to show gratitude or respect to the local community.
“We never said they couldn’t come because we understand that many are parents who need to work and fishing is an opportunity for them,” said one resident. “But what we won’t accept is that while they’re here, they don’t behave and instead commit acts of vandalism like theft and violence against people.”
Notably, local police failed to intervene in the conflict, standing by as the events unfolded. This morning’s incident marks the latest in a series of clashes between locals and outsiders in Celestún, with many residents calling for authorities to take action against what they perceive as a growing problem.
