Rector of UPY Suspended Due to Sexual and Labor Harassment Allegations and Investigations Launched

- July 21, 2024

The Rector of the University of Yucatan (UPY) has been suspended by order of the Secretary of the General Comptroller’s Office of the State (SECOGEY) due to allegations of sexual and labor harassment made by students, teachers and staff members.

According to SECOGEY, they received a complaint from alumni, students and faculty members accusing Rector Alfredo Martín Ulibarri Benítez of labor and gender-related issues. In response to these accusations, the State Government has suspended Ulibarri Benítez from his position pending an investigation into the allegations.

In addition to the suspension, the Secretary of Women (SEMUJERES) has established contact with the affected parties and will provide comprehensive and free legal and psychological services to any faculty member whose rights have been violated. The state agency will also remain available to receive requests from students, teachers, and administrative staff at the university who wish to seek its accompaniment.

It is worth noting that UPY participates in the “Violet Distinctive” program, which allows it to operate with protocols that ensure a safe space for women. The State Government reiterates its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of women and combating all forms of violence in Yucatan, emphasizing the importance of public officials conducting themselves with respect and adherence to the law.
