Complaints against police in Yucatán: over 2,000 filed in 2023

- August 3, 2024

In 2023, the Commission for Human Rights of the State of Yucatán (CODHEY) received more than 2,000 complaints of human rights violations.

Most of these complaints were directed against state and municipal police forces, according to a note from El Universal newspaper.

CODHEY stated that 70% of the complaints they receive are related to the actions of police corporations.

This year, in late February, a 23-year-old man was found dead in his cell at the Dzitnup Municipal Jail in Valladolid, after being detained for three days for disrupting public order.

The most recent case is that of Bokobá, where citizen Erwin Enrique, 44 years old, received a beating from two municipal police officers.

CODHEY will issue recommendations in Bokobá

Regarding this matter, Francisco Mendoza Aguilar, General Visitor of CODHEY, announced that the human rights organization will issue a recommendation to local authorities.

“We will notify the Ayuntamiento of Bokobá about the facts so that within 15 days they respond regarding all the facts attributed to the Municipal Police,” he stated.

The visitor indicated that as part of the investigation carried out by CODHEY, it was learned that on July 23rd, police allegedly attended a report of theft and arrested the victim without any reason.

Erwin Enrique was taken to the outskirts of the municipality where they threw him into the woods, thinking he had died, but he did not. He is currently hospitalized at the Agustín O’Hórán Hospital due to his injuries.

“There will be an issued recommendation against the Ayuntamiento of Bokobá and they must comply, but first an administrative procedure must be followed to determine the responsibility of the police officers,” Mendoza Aguilar added.

However, he specified that the Attorney General is carrying out the investigations and depending on the outcome, it could lead to the arrest of the police officers involved in the aggression.

The visitor confirmed that the Ayuntamiento of Bokobá has dismissed the police officers involved.

In case of serious injuries suffered by the victim, the municipal authority will have to provide a compensation to the victim as a repair for the damage.
